Haiti Happenings

April 2020

“The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in due season. You open your hand; You satisfy the desire of every living thing. The Lord is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His works. The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” Psalm 145:15-18

Dear Family,

Reflecting on God’s providence has been taking a good amount of my “shelter-in-place” down time lately. On top of reminding myself through this anxious time that God is good ALL THE TIME and He IS still faithful, I am also amazed at the timing of my trip to Haiti last month:

It had been almost two years since my last visit, and even up to the last minute of me boarding the plane to leave the U.S. my trip was up in the air (pun not intended, haha) due to the continued instability of Haiti. And then to be there during the outbreak of the virus and arrive home (both going and coming back on my originally scheduled flights) just as presidents and governors began mandating closures and shut-downs…I am speechless. I don’t think I have ever before been a partaker in a more unmistakable example of God’s perfect timing. He literally cracked open the door just wide enough and for just enough time for me to squeeze inside and back out before it was shut. I stand in awe of His grace, so undeserved.

God allowed me the opportunity to carry in three large bags full of food, cleaning and office supplies, toilet paper (we joked as I was leaving that maybe I should bring some back with me!!), and my personal priority: BOOKS!! 100 French/English books to give to our school kids, donated by many who participated in an Usborne fund-raiser my sister, Claire, held last year. Not only was I able to bring in physical necessities and treasures, I was able to give of myself while there, to remind everyone there that I have not forgotten about them and that I, and many others here, still pray for and remember them daily. Mdme. François, especially, asked me to tell everyone here thank you VERY MUCH for their prayers after her stroke in January. She has recovered remarkably well, and though her speech is still slow she was able to visit with me almost as if nothing had happened.

Of course I relished the time spent with all the kids at the beach property: most of them are the ones to whom I was either a teacher or nanny-like authority when I lived in Haiti. I even got to be Kelsey and Josiah’s “substitute teacher” on a couple of mornings while Dee got some other work done. Since the week I was there was the celebration of the Jewish holiday Purim we read through the book of Esther and had fun learning and discussing it together. I also helped Dee with her growing garden, some of the cooking and cleaning, and Dee, Wilckly and I held some informal vision meetings. It was wonderful to be in my second home again with my Haitian family, hearing of their hopes, dreams, struggles, and plans.

Thank YOU for all your prayers and support that make my visits possible, and Lord willing, I will be planning teams trips again before the year is out.

In Christ,

Shaina Ascone

Please pray:

  • For Wilckly, Dee, and the kids as they serve in Haiti during a time of now even greater instability.
  • For wisdom, clarity, health, energy, and peace for them and all under their leadership.
  • For the means to continue providing for all those under their care in Haiti.
  • For the growth of the ministry.
  • For God’s protection over all of our students and teachers, and those in our churches.
  • For peace for Haiti and its people.
