Haiti Happenings

December 2018

How silently, how silently,

The wondrous gift is giv’n!

So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven.

No ear may hear His coming,

But in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive Him still,

The dear Christ enters in.

O Little Town of Bethlehem

Phillips Brooks/Lewis H. Redner

Dear Family,

I am so grateful for a church that still sings the old hymns. As soul-stirring to me as many of the new worship songs can be, there is something about the essence of our faith some of them do not capture like the lyrics of the old hymns do. Especially when it comes to Christmas hymns.

Look at those lyrics from verse 3 of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” – I mean really look at them. Yes, God’s gift did come silently on that night thousands of years ago…in a tiny baby, insignificant to the eyes of the world, born to a poor family in a barn. Yet through this silent, wondrous gift, God has imparted to us the gift of Himself. And no matter who we are or where we are or what we have done, when we meekly receive Him, He enters in, He abides with us: Immanuel! The truth of these words imbues hope inexpressible. It’s why I love Christmas so much. It’s why I love music. It’s why I love searching for treasures like these among old hymns that I sing every year yet often overlook.

Just when I am tempted to despair…wondering what good my prayers are doing and how God can really generate change in Haiti…He brings me a reminder of His love and grace. This gift is offered to everyone. Including those in Haiti.

Praying they will receive Him,

Shaina Ascone

I received news today that two of the girls I taught in Sunday School and J.A.M. Club, who have grown up in our Carries church and school, were baptized this week! Praise the Lord for their bold statement of faith, and please pray for Olguine and Djeunika as they strive to live a life glorifying to God.
