Haiti Happenings

September 2019

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Romans 15:13

Dear Family,

My favorite season has arrived: a season that, for those in our location on the globe, means sweaters and boots, hot tea and apple cider, pumpkin spice, and falling leaves. I, like most humans, have never been one to relish change. Especially not change that I did not induce. But I always love the turn of the seasons. And living in Haiti, where the two seasons are wet and hot or dry and hot, I came to appreciate our temperate climate even more.

But that appreciation hasn’t carried over into my emotional or spiritual responses as much as I’d like. For example, moving back here from Haiti was one of the most difficult things I have ever gone through. I say “gone through” because it wasn’t just a one-and-done decision. It is an every-day inner struggle between knowing I am at peace back here in the U.S., knowing God had called me to serve Haiti from this side and in this new way and yet feeling torn, knowing I am still needed there, too. It took me a long time to work through all those emotions. Every time Haiti goes through a crisis they surface all over again.

You may wonder why I am sharing all this with you. It is something that has been on my heart lately, grateful to God for bringing me through yet knowing that this “torn” feeling is something missionaries deal with every day. The feeling of being needed in two, or many more, places at once. Of the many things God taught me while I was in Haiti, one was how to be more in tune with the needs of our brothers and sisters serving as missionaries all over the world. If you are ever at a loss of how to pray for them, pray for this. Pray for God to win the struggle. Pray that they would give over the burden of being needed to Him and do what He is giving them to do, moment by moment, step by step. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Pray that they would know His peace that passes all understanding.

In Christ,

Shaina Ascone
